High level meeting is presently underway at Cong Prez residence

Amid the ongoing 2G note crisis, a high level meeting is presently underway at Congress President Sonia Gandhi's residence. Senior Congress leaders AK Antony and Ahmed Patel are attending the meeting. According to media reports, finance minister Pranab Mukherjee also joined them at 10 Janpath some time later.
The reports said that the home minister P Chidambaram and finance minister Pranab Mukherjee may address the media later in the day to clarify the situation.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is likely to hold a meeting of ministers this evening to defuse the crisis arising out of the controversial finance ministry for more details....

Raids at former DMK minister Anbarasan's residence

The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption today carried out raids at the residence of former Tamil Nadu Minister T M Anbarasan at Kundrathur near here in connection with a disproportionate assets complaint, police said.
Anbarasan was the Labour Minister in the previous DMK government.

3 ministers meet FM to find a way out of 2G row

Amid the raging row over the controversial 2G note, three ministers last night met Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee at his residence to find a way out to end the political storm.
PK Bansal, V Narayanaswamy and Rajiv Shukla met Mukherjee after 11 pm when the Finance Minister drove in from his North Block office.
There was no official word on what transpired at the meeting.

2G scam: CBI to file FIR against Dayanidhi by Sept 30

The CBI on Wednesday told the Supreme Court that an FIR against former communications minister and DMK leader Dayanidhi Maran in the 2G case would be filed by the end of this month.
The CBI told the apex court that the preliminary inquiry in respect of Maran in the 2G scam has been completed.
The probe agency's senior counsel KK Venugopal told the apex court bench of Justice GS Singhvi and Justice AK Ganguly that the conclusions drawn on the basis of the initial inquiry were being looked into by CBI officials and the decision on the filing of an FIR against for more details....

2G row: BJP slams PM for his defence of home minster

The BJP on Wednesday slammed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for his defence of home minster P Chidambaram in the 2G spectrum issue.
Talking to media, BJP leader Sushma Swaraj said that the PM had, a few months back, expressed his commitment to fight corruption but he is not keeping his promise by defending Chidambaram.
Swaraj said that Chidambaram had committed the same crime as jailed former telecom minister A Raja. She further said that the CBI was also trying to protect Chidambaram as it had recorded the statements of BJP leaders Arun Shourie and Jaswant Singh but not for more details....

Calcutta HC upholds Singur Land Act

As a huge victory for West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the Singur Land Rehabilitation and Development Act was today upheld by the Calcutta High Court.
The Act was constitutional and valid, said the High Court.

Delhi Court to decide on Amar's bail plea today

A Delhi court will on Wednesday decide on former Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh's bail plea in the 2008 cash-for-votes scam.
The Rajya Sabha MP's interim bail in 2008 scam was extended for a day on Tuesday by special judge Sangita Dhingra Sehgal.
Arguing for Singh's bail, his counsel Hariharan said that as per the medical report received from AIIMS, his client is still not well and his vital parameters are above normal limit.
"I (Amar Singh) have amply demonstrated before the court that I am a sick and infirm person and the court could grant me bail on this ground alone,"he said.
He also said the prosecution has no evidence against his client to show his involvement in the alleged conspiracy of bribing BJP MPs to win their votes in the for more details....

Pranab to speak on 2G issue, if needed, after meeting PM

Union finance minister Pranab Mukherjee on Tuesday maintained that he will speak, if necessary, on the finance ministry note on 2G spectrum allocation issue only after talking to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh tomorrow.
"I am reiterating what I have said in New York and Delhi. If there is anything necessary to speak on the finance ministry note obtained through an RTI application, I will speak after talking to the Prime Minister and other senior colleagues tomorrow", Mukherjee told reporters at his residence here.

HM should be summoned and examined as a witness says, Raja

Former Telecom Minister A Raja today told a Delhi court that former finance minister and now Home Minister P Chidambaram, should be summoned and examined as a witness in the 2G spectrum allocation case.
Appearing for Raja, senior advocate Shushil Kumar told Special CBI Judge OP Saini that the agency should have recorded Chidambaram's statement regarding a cabinet meeting in which he had clarified the issue of dilution of shares.
Raja's counsel submitted that Chidambaram should be asked whether he gave the advice on the issue of dilution of shares in the presence of Prime Minister for more details....

2G issue: Pranab to meet Sonia today

In an attempt to contain the damage due to the growing perception of a dispute between him and home minister P Chidambaram over the 2G issue, finance minister Pranab Mukherjee is expected to meet Sonia Gandhi on Monday after returning from New York. According to reports, the finance minister will inform Sonia about his meeting with the Prime Minister in New York.
According to media reports, Pranab told the PM in New York that the Prime Minister's Office was behind the leaking of the 2G note, which is the cause of the present controversy. Pranab also told the PM that PMO role too could come under scanner in the case.
Pranab is also expected to meet home minister P Chidambaram in India to further diffuse the tension, according to media reports.

PM fully backs Chidambaram on the 2G spectrum issue

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Thursday fully backed Home Minister P Chidambaram on the 2G spectrum issue and ruled out any infighting among the ministers.
"I don't know what note you are talking about. The whole 2G matter is before the court. I don't want to comment on a matter that is subjudice,"he told media accompanying him from Frankfurt to New York.
"As far as Mr P Chidambaram is concerned, as Finance Minister, he had enjoyed my full confidence and as Home Minister he continues to enjoy and inspire my full confidence,"he said.

Hasina expressed that her country will be able to work out the Teesta water deal

Hailing Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's recent visit to Bangladesh as "really successful,"Bangladesh Premier Sheikh Hasina has expressed optimism that her country will be able to work out the Teesta water sharing agreement with India.
India and Bangladesh had inked various pacts during Singh's visit early this month but could not sign a deal on the Teesta water sharing.
Hasina said she was not disappointed that the two sides could not sign the Teesta water sharing deal during the visit.

Congress leaders Vaghela and Modhvaida end their fast

Congress leaders Shankarsinh Vaghela and Arjun Modhvaida today ended their fast, which was a counter to the one observed by Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.
They ended their fast by consuming lemon juice offered by children.

Did Guj CM able to clean his image by his fast?

Gujarat CM Narendra Modi sat on a three-day fast for"harmony"in Ahmedabad after the Supreme Court referred to a lower court a case in which he was accused of complicity in the 2002 violence. Shivraj Patil resigns as Karnataka Lokayukta

Barely two months after he was appointed Lokayukta of Karnataka, Justice Shivraj Patil today resigned after a controversy erupted over allotment of housing sites for him and his wife allegedly in violation of rules. 71-year-old Patil, a former Supreme Court judge who was made Karnataka's ombudsman on August 3 succeeding Santosh Hegde, called on Governor H R Bhardwaj and submitted the papers.
Stung by the the allegations against him, a visibly upset Patil announced his resignation at a news conference after describing the campaign against him as"malicious"."This malicious campaign has deeply hurt and pained me. In this uncongenial atmosphere I have deemed it appropriate to submit my resignation,"he said.

Delhi Blast case: Mail traced police quiz cyber cafe owner

Security officials have traced the origin of the HuJI email, claiming responsibity for the Delhi High Court blast on Wednesday, to a cyber cafe in Kishtwar district, Jammu and Kashmir, say media reports. Reports say that the police are questioning the cyber cafe owner from where the email allegedly originated.
The email was received by different media organisations on Wednesday allegedly from Harkat-ul-Jihad al-Islami (HuJI) and said that the group took responsibility for the blasts which killed 11 people and injured over 70. HuJI is a outlawed Bangladesh-based terrorist for more details....

Manmohan announces duty free import of 61 items from B'desh

Cash-for-vote scam: Amar Singh arrested, sent to judicial custody

Former SP general secretary Amar Singh has been arrested in connection with the cash-for-vote scam. Delhi court rejected his bail petition and sent him to judicial custody.

Prime Minister arrives in Dhaka

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today arrived here on a two-day visit aimed at further strengthening India's relations with Bangladesh.

Janardhan, Srinivas Reddy sent to 14 days judicial custody

A special CBI court in Hyderabad today (Sep 5) has sent mining baron and former minister G Janardhan Reddy and Managing Director of Obalapuram Mining Company B V Srinivas Reddy to 14 days judicial custody after searches at their premises allegedly led to seizure of over 30 kg of gold and more than Rs 4.5 crore in cash.

In the wake of a newspaper report stating that Tamil Nadu chief ministers had not declared their assets since long, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa today said she possesses assets worth over Rs 51 crore and has not purchased any new property since coming to power three months ago.

CBI conducts raid at Janardhana Reddy residence; questions him

A CBI team has raided the residence of former Karnataka Tourism minister and mining czar G Janardhana Reddy and also questioned him, sources said today.
The CBI team from Hyderabad entered Reddy's house at around midnight and escorted him to an undisclosed location for questioning, they said.
The team was also questioning Srinivasa Reddy, the managing director of Obulapuram Mining Corporation which is owned by the former minister.

Team Anna: Govt running smear campaign against us

BJP demands recall of Gujarat Governor

A BJP delegation, under senior party leader LK Advani, is expected to meet President Pratibha Patil on Friday to demand recall of Gujarat Governor Kamla Beniwal for appointing Lokayukta in the state without consulting the chief minister Narendra Modi. The post had been lying vacant since2003.
